Movie Review: Mighty Morphin Power Ranger

Go go Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

It is finally here, the Power Rangers reboot. A darker take one a very beloved series to many. The last couple of weeks Twitch has been hyping up the release of this movie with their old school Power Rangers Marathon. They started all the way back with the original series and slowly moved towards the newer releases. Because I never got to see the original Power Rangers I used this opportunity to watch some of the old episodes. Although it was cheesy, and the acting wasn’t very good, it had such an uplifting and overall happy vibe, that it was a lot of fun to watch. However it made me wonder, what will the Power Rangers movie look like without any of this? How will this darker version connect with the original concept of the Power Rangers?

The small nods to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

There were a lot of easter eggs in this movie, which I really liked. For example you had the scene where the zords were running towards the city. This scene was shot from the side, just like in the original series. Then ofcourse there were the puddies and the famous line ‘it’s morphin time’. Small things like this make the movie even more enjoyable for the fans.

Back Story (Introduction of the Green Ranger)

I really like the back story that was given to Zordon and Rita. Zordon and Rita were rangers in the original Power Rangers team. However, Rita betrayed all the other Power Rangers and along with Zordon and the Power Ranger stones she was trapped for many years. Throughout the movie I assumed that Rita would end up losing her powers and that the Green Ranger would be introduced. If you’re one of te people who staid for the scene after the end credits then you know that the Green Ranger, Tommy, was indeed mentioned. He is the latest member to join detention. Unfortunately we did not get to see his face though. Yet I’m really looking forward to his story.

Rough start

It took a while for this movie to get going and to really feel like a power ranger movie. In the beginning you get introduced to these problematic teenagers who are going through some tough times. This part lasts for quite some time and is the opposite of the original power rangers which was very cheerful and uplifting. This woud have been allright if the charaters were likeable from the get go, but honestly they weren’t (except for Billy). Once they got into the fightscenes it felt more like a Power Rangers movie.

Odd camera work

The camera work in this movie was weird sometimes and actually caused me to get motion sick in the move theater. One of the weird camera scenes is the scene were Jason is driving his car and ends up crashing the car. The entire chase scene and crash is filmed from the inside of Jason’s car. The camera constantly keeps flipping between the back window, Jason’s face and the front window. It was awful and it made me a bit nauseous. It also didn’t help that this scene lasted for quite a long time.

All in all the movie was very entertaining, but there is some room for improvement. I do hope that there will be a part 2 of the Power Rangers, because I would love to see what they do with the character of the Green Ranger. I would also like more background stories for the current rangers. However, after part 1 I’m a bit unsure if a second movie will be approved. Let’s hope we get another one. For now I want to say that this movie was allright. It made me want to watch more of the Power Rangers series.

So have you seen the movie? What did you think of it?

Rating: 3/5
